A Summer Knit

May 21, 2012

As much as I love to knit, I have to admit that I have never been one to knit for warmer weather. I have always been someone who loves to sit in the depth of winter, wool running through my fingers, as a way to pass the grey days. As the sun begins to shine, and the earth warms up, I seem to lose the desire to take needle to hand.

That was, until I discovered the joys of knitting with cotton.

How is it possible that I have never knit with cotton before? Sure, I have made washcloths and burp cloths, but never a garment. I was going through my stash the other day when I came across an entire box of organic cotton from my dying days. As we are in the middle of some serious spring cleaning, I admired it with an “I need to figure out what to do with you, or you are going to need to leave my home” kind of way.

I had recently seen a picture of Julia’s adorable nephew wearing a vest that looked perfect for this time of year. The Plain Vest by Pickles is the quickest knit that I have ever done, and I loved the way that it turned out. It needed a few modifications, which thankfully were easily found on Raverly, and in less than 3 hours Landon had a swanky new mama made cotton vest, perfect for those warm days and cool nights that spring brings. I loved it so much that I immediately cast on for one in white, as well as the Plain Cardigan.

I have had a strong urge to make more of Landon’s clothes, and as we speak I am heading to the sewing machine to try my hand at trousers and a few shorts for the warm days ahead. There is just something so precious about seeing this newly walking babe toddling around in handmade goodies made with his mama’s love.

Who knows, maybe I will become a regular summer knitter.
