Black Raspberries and Harvest Baskets

July 11, 2012

Nothing really says Summer like berry picking at the farm. The taste of a warm, sun ripened black raspberry is heavenly, and spending the day picking fruit with my kiddos (+  niece) is an activity that I look forward to as the warmer weather sets in.

June brings about strawberry picking, then pie cherries, red currants, black raspberries, etc. Every few weeks we pack a picnic, grab plenty of water, and pick fruit while dreaming up different ways that we can eat it (besides in the car on the way home). Ice cream, jam, pie, etc. are always discussed and voted upon, and we spend the next few days loving every last berry.

This year, in addition to our favorite teal blue berry basket, we added in a sewing project I had been meaning to make for  years. The Harvest Basket from the Autumn edition 2010 of Rhythm of the Home is a favorite of many, and certainly a great project for anyone who has some fruit of veggies to gather this season. I used a repurposed piece of linen that I loved as the outer fabric, and it brought a smile to my face to see it in use.

The pattern is very simple, takes under 30 minutes to make, and my kids spent the entire day arguing over who got to use it (note to self, make enough for all your children).

Now the best part, the eating. I think I see some coconut milk and black raspberry ice cream in our very near future.

Peek a boo – I see you. I love that picture.

It’s such the perfect time of year to enjoy all that is berry goodness and delicious. I love the Harvest Basket – it’s something we could do with making…in abundance at the moment with all that their is to bring in from the produce.

We love that place but we have not been there this year yet. Lovely pictures, as always.

That harvest basket is a fabulous idea- I imagine how wonderful it would be for carrying in large loads of greens from the garden!

Hi Heather,
I was just telling my husband I need to go pick some berries, etc. soon and mentioned Berry Patch Farm to him and then I saw your post! How timely! I live in Denver and will have to schedule a trip there soon!
