Right Now I Am: Tending

April 14, 2011

Tending to three children with Rotavirus, two of whom are recovering nicely, and one who is on day 5 of no eating, and is beginning to worry his mama to no end.

Elwood has been hit the hardest with this bug, with Jacob already having had Rota when he was 18 months, and Landon breastfeeding non-stop, they are both coming through much better than my poor Elwood. We are still holding out hope of keeping him out of the hospital, and a huge thank you to Bernadette for her hydration drink recipe. I am not sure where she found this, but even our pediatrician was impressed with it, and encouraged us to keep a cup going for Elwood throughout the day and night.

I am sorry for not posting about the winners of the Alphabet Glue giveaway before now, but they will be at the bottom of the original post by later this afternoon, and the winners emailed. I wish you all a week of health and happiness, and I will look forward to a return next week.

Bernadette’s Hydration Recipe
1/3 cup of fresh lemon juice
1/3 cup honey (or to taste)
1/4 tsp sea salt
2 calcium/magneisum tablets, crushed
water to make 4 cups

*Please note that this is a simple recipe that my family has used, please check with your doctor or naturopath before giving to your child. A child under the age of 12 months should never be given honey.

I can hear in your writing your heart's ache for your children. Hang in there, I hope your little one starts taking in more nutrition. When my kids have been really sick I have given liquids a tablespoon at the time every 10- 15 minutes to hold them over until they felt better. Hope they get better soon.

If he can manage this, it's worth trying a natural yoghurt drink to help fight the nasty bacteria. I blend ice cubes with plain organic yoghurt and stir in some agave syrup. I start with spoonfuls and increase the amount until they can keep it down. It's certainly not a hydration method, but it's helped my kids get rid of recent winter tummy bugs. Really hoping yours get better soon.

Thoughts and prayers out to your family, that this passes quickly. I was always so grateful that my nursing babies were receiving such strong immune boosting milk – but the older ones we always worry about. Stomach flues are the worst. My mom gave us bananas when we had the runs (amongst other weird wonderful herbal concoctions – one of the worst in my memories was the slippery elm tea). Healing blessings!

Heather, sending prayers for the little Elwood to recover soon! It's always so worrying when our little ones are not well, I know. And for you lots of strength, taking care of ill children (and 3 of them) must be over exhausting! love.

I am lucky enough to have my mom and dad down the street, which is such a blessing. Honestly though, I try to never get them sick if possible, so during moments like these, I am self-imposed on my own :) .

Thank you so much Erin. This really helped Elwood as he was getting towards the stage of wanting something to eat, but not being ready to hold down solid food. I really appreciate the recipe. Have a great weekend!

I am very glad to hear you have your parents close by. Of course I understand not wanting to infect them with anything, especially now your Dad is recovering his own wellbeing. Caroline xx
