Sunday Serenity: The Heart of Friendship

February 14, 2010

This week, serenity for me has been gathering together to celebrate love in all it’s many forms; The love I have for my children, the love of the man I married, the love of the parents who are always with me, and the love of the friends I cherish so much everyday.

I have been thinking a lot about what makes me feel connected to the world, and a big part of it is the friendships that I am lucky enough to have.

Serenity is ……..

A late breakfast on a Saturday morning with a dear friend, talking about all the good and bad of our daily lives

Browsing through the fabric store for hours

Enjoying a heart filled cup of coffee in a small coffee shop

in a fun weekend town

Spending the day like this as Bernadette and I did yesterday, is one of my favorite ways to seek out serenity.

I also realized this week that sometimes, serenity is not always found in the quiet, in the meditative and clean. Sometimes it is found in the wild, the messy and bright. Sometimes, it is found with three adults, six children, and a whole lot of chocolate.

While chocolate and romance go well together, chocolate and friendship is a perfect fit.

A twist on fudge

Chocolate and coffee mousse,

And coconut chocolate goodness

Grandpa’s Mashed Potato Candy
recipe by Missy Buehl

3/4c mashed potatoes
aprox 4c shredded coconut
3 3/4c powdered sugar
1 tsp almond or vanilla extract, or a combination of both totalling 1 tsp.
melted bittersweet chocolate

Combine all of the ingredients and refrigerate until firm. Form into walnut or smaller sized balls and refrigerate again until very firm. Dip in chocolate, and store in refrigerator

This week, serenity was simple. It was taking the time to eat, drink and enjoy the friendships that I am blessed with. It was a table full of food, and children full of chocolate and laughter

It was remembering that friendship is a very special kind of love

Happy Valentine’s Day my dear friends.

You are so right- serenity is often found where a few are gathered together. Your valentines celebration looks like such fun. I am so inspired by those mashed potato candies–what a terrific idea!

Love the photographs as always and thanks for sharing all your thoughts. I will be trying the recipe. Where is the little town? I too spend some searching through the fabric shop and spent far too much. I am busy making fabric envelopes and cards for a friend to take to a craft fair in Dorset at Easter.
Happy Valentines Day.

Oh my this looks like a whole lot of goodness. Thank you for sharing all these wonderful moments. Isn't it nice to connect, share a bit of love, and learn from others. I can't wait to make those yummy mashed potato candies. Since they have potatoes they're considered a veggie right?

Happy Valentine's Day Heather! Right before I came over to your blog, I was telling my husband that I was in the mood for a snack, he asked me what I wanted and I wasn't sure, well that was until I saw your candy! Looks so good, I want to eat it right off of the screen 🙂

Sachi February 15, 2010 at 1:45 am

This looks absolutely lovely. How is your sister-in-law?

Jenn February 15, 2010 at 2:09 am

Thank you so much for sharing! The fabric and coffee look so tempting right now. We don't really celebrate valentine's day (both been in retail too long). But my husband's philosophy is why should we be told what day to go and spend a bunch of money on the one(s) you love when you can do it in little ways all year round. I've gotten to spend most of my day with our little ones which would only be better if hubby didn't have to work.
Beautiful pictures and fantastic recipe.

Earth Mama February 15, 2010 at 3:32 am

So true. I have to remeber that beauty can be found in even the most hectic chaos..especially with children. They just are children after all. It looks like you had some wonderufl time well spent with friends…and chocolate, you did mention the chocolate. Both of those desserts looked delicious!!

Heather February 15, 2010 at 3:43 am

Oh, please tell me what fabric shop you guys were browsing in. I live in Fort Collins too, but I desperately want to find a good, non big-box, fabric store to shop at. Thank you!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Kelly February 15, 2010 at 1:40 pm

I am so loving all of this. It looks like perfection. Not in a sense of being perfect. But in being just what is needed to fill your heart and soul up.

Lisa Q February 15, 2010 at 1:44 pm

great stuff Heather…sounds like an idyllic weekend! thanks for sharing and Happy Valentines day to you too!

Jennifer February 16, 2010 at 3:30 am

Oh, that Saturday looks like a dream come true! And I'm very curious about the twist on fudge; you'll have to tell more. All of it looks yummy and fun. I have to agree that serenity can be found as much in the wild, loud and messy as in the peaceful; it's all about what's in your heart.

each photo in this post is lovelier than the last.
