Store Update Tomorrow

August 31, 2008

Hi Everyone,

I had forgotten that tomorrow is a holiday, and I have gotten a lot of emails asking what time the store update will be. To be fair to everyone, the update will be at 8 pm EST, rather than at 8 am. See you all tomorrow!

I have not done much posting recently, but I have to say that right now my entire life revolves around yarn. I literally have it everywhere. I think that my husband is close to some sort of yarn nervous breakdown, and even my kids are starting to ask me if it might be possible to take the yarn out of the bathtub so that they can wash up properly. Dying for Autumn has been a real treat because it is my favorite time of year. I love the colors of the season, and recreating them has been a great sensory experience. My family and I have recently spent a lot of time outdoors; hiking, biking, camping, etc. and it was really fun to see all of us out there, looking around, gaining inspiration on new colors for Shivaya. That really is the whole point of dying with natural dyes, to bring the colors of nature to the knitting needles. It took me months to achieve the brown and gold colors that will be featured in the Autumn collection. I played around with dozens of skeins, colors and combinations until I got it the way that I wanted it to be. That is really the fun of doing this; to go to the studio every day, knowing what you want to try and create, and then also finding dozens of new colors that you never dreamed of. I worked with cashmere for the Autumn collection, and my husband thought I was half way to crazyville because I was experimenting while dying it! One of my favorite colors of the entire collection turned out to be one of those experiments. The red and orange colors in this skein of Shivaya Cashmere Lace perfectly embodies the colors that Autumn, at it’s peak, can bring. The process of creating new colors is fascinating for me, mainly because it feels like the possibilities are endless.

Creating Shivaya has been a process, and choosing the yarns, and the schedule for putting yarns on the website has been a process as well. Currently, we are carrying a lot of different kinds of yarn. Last week I sent out an email to some of our customers asking them if they would like us to streamline what we have, and just carry some very specific types of yarns (sock, lace, etc.), rather than carrying such a huge variety. The overwhelming answer was no. Most people said that having the option for many different types of yarn was important, because there is not a lot of variety in the market right now. It is almost impossible for me to keep going with weekly updates of all of the yarns we carry, so therefore, I think that what I have landed on is the idea that I will be carrying all of the varieties of yarn that we now have (as well as the new varieties that will be featured over the next few weeks), but I will only be releasing certain yarns twice a season. I have not worked out exactly which yarns will be released when, but my thought is to have a weekly update of yarns, and in each of those updates, we will include our permanent collection, and then a seasonal collection. I am currently trying to work on organizing the website to fit this system as well. You all will have to bear with me through the next few weeks, but I think that this will be a smoother system. On September 1st we will be featuring new Shivaya Naturals Premium Lace, Cashmere Lace, Silky Cashmere Lace, Cashmere Sock, Hand Dyed Alpaca, and Silky Merino. I will update next week as to what yarns will be featured on Monday, September 8th.

One of the big yarns that was dyed for Autumn was cashmere. This was beyond a special treat to work with. My two favorites of this collection are the lace weight 100% cashmere, and the lace weight silk/cashmere blend. The colors are just dynamic, and the drape and softness are outstanding. Here are a few of the colors that will be available on September 1st.

As a final note, we will be launching a Seasons of Shivaya Lace club. Sign-ups for the Winter season will begin September 15th, and the ship date will be November 1st. The club will include a lace pattern, a set of gorgeous hand-crafted lace stitch markers from an independent designer, and a skein of 1300 yards of Shivaya Merino Lace, with three new Winter colorways to choose from. I am really excited to launch the Seasons of Shivaya Lace club, and I hope that you will join me.

I know that was a long update, but I hope that it was worth it!
